One day not long after that, he said, he was in her office and she told him, “This is how we can get away with it.” After that she outlined a plan that essentially was the one Bill followed later when the murder was actually committed.

Maggiotto asked if he was talking to Pete and J.R. about this at that time.

“Yes,” Bill said.

“Did they offer any assistance?”

“No.”

“Did you look for a gun?”

“Yes,” he said, relating how he tried to get into cars fingered for him by Cecelia.

“When was the first time you tried to kill Gregg?” the prosecutor asked.

It was late in March, Bill said. Pam had a meeting that night and she said that would be a good time to do it. He told her he would try, but he had no intention of doing it.

“It was not something I wanted to do,” he said. “But I didn’t tell her that. I was saying, All right, I’ll go ahead.’”

However, instead of going to the condo in Derry to attack Gregg, he went home. Later that night, after his mother went to bed, he called Pam at her office. He thought Pam would understand and the relationship would settle down and continue as it had for the last month or so.

“I told her I didn’t go up. I didn’t have a car or a gun. She snapped at me.”

“What do you mean?” Maggiotto asked.

“She started yelling at me,” he said. “She screamed, ‘You don’t love me. If you did, you’d do this for me so we could be together. You don’t want us to be together. There’s no sense going on and seeing each other like this because we’re never going to be together.’”

“How did you feel?”

“I was really upset,” Bill said. “I started crying.

“What was Pam’s voice like?”

“I had never heard her like that.”

“What did you think was going on?”

“I thought that was it,” he explained; he thought the relationship was finished. But it wasn’t.

The next day, he said, Cecelia approached him between classes and extended another invitation from Pam.

“I went over to see her, and she apologized for getting mad. She said not to worry, that she had another meeting coming up and we could do it then.”

“After she told you that, what did you do?” Maggiotto asked.

“I said okay, I’d do it. At this time I started talking to Pete and J.R. and Raymond again. I wanted to get a gun to show her. J.R. and Pete still refused to help me. They said I was crazy.”

“What about Raymond?”

According to Bill, Raymond asked what Pam had in her house that was worth stealing.

“I told Raymond what the situation was,” Bill said. “I told him that Pam said if he helped me out, he could have anything in the house that he wanted. He said all right.”

Before he died, Raymond’s father was a police officer, Bill said, and Raymond thought his gun was still around the house somewhere. But when they searched they were unable to find it. Raymond said not to worry, that a knife would do just as well.
